scotty mccreery liveScotty McCreery takes on two feisty ladies on American Idol tonight. (May 18, 2011)

Scotty McCreery is the last man standing on American Idol and when the 17-year-old country crooner takes the stage tonight he will be singing for a spot in the finals. Some might say he has had an easy ride so far this year. He has never been in danger of going home and the judges seem to really love him. What makes him likeable is that he knows who he is and isn’t going to change to fit a trend. Some weeks he might have sing a song that he is not familiar with or that is in a genre he knows nothing about, but he does it, has fun with it then goes back to doing what he does. You might say that while many contestants on American idol struggle to find out who they are, Scotty already knows who he is and any side trips he might take are simply because the show demands it not because he is trying to redefine his sound.

I feel that of the remaining three Scotty McCreery has the best chance of having a big career after the show. Right now he could walk into a studio and cut a country album that could get played on the radio. It is hard to say that about the other contestants – not just the other two left standing, but any of them from the top 12.

To me what has endeared Scotty to the American Idol audience is that he seems like a genuinely good guy who is having a good time. I’m sure he is competitive (he is an athlete after all) and I’m sure he would love to win, but his persona is very laid back and he takes things and rolls with them. So far it has gotten him into the Top 3. There is no need to change it now. He will sing three songs tonight one of which is a Kenny Rogers classic. I expect him to nail it and would be shocked if he is anything less than excellent on the other two songs.

I don’t know if Scotty McCreery can win American Idol. I think Lauren Alaina is likely his stiffest competition, but I am almost certain we will be hearing a lot more of that deep voice long after American Idol has ended.
